Homework 10/7/09
Brainstorm three ideas for a social experiment that emphasizes a double standard. Think about the different roles in society and play with those, try to think realistically taking into consideration time, availability of group members, and at least try not to get arrested in the process XD.
Don't forget to read the three readings given out in class.
1.)Walk in to shops with a couple ( guy and girl)and have both guy and girl attempt to purchase the items. See whether the cashier takes the guys or girls' card.
2.)See if men are more prone to help a girl in attractive apparel rather than casual wear.
3.)Talk to a complete stranger as if you know them. Time the conversation.
1. See who is more likely to stop to help a man broken down on the side of the road vs. a woman.
2. Have a nicely dressed female sit in the school cafeteria and be as rude as possible. Burp, fart, scratch inappropriate areas. See how many people she drives away.
3. Have two different girls hand out flyers, one nicely dressed and one very dorky? looking. Gauge the girls success in handing out flyers.
1. Have a very sharply dressed, polite man/women ask to borrow a strangers cell phone to make a call, versus a distracted, very disheveled man/woman ask to borrow a strangers cell phone. Gauge the responses. It would be a good idea to use both a man and a woman for these experiments so that we can see the differences.
2. Have a man and a woman dressed in t shirts and boxers walk into a store. Generally, the woman would be allowed in because a woman in men's boxers is socially acceptable, but if a man were to walk into a store in just boxers, he would almost indefinitely be kicked out.
3. Have a short person walk around a large department store and ask taller people to help them get things that are too high for them to reach. Then have a very tall person walk through the same store, but have them ask short people to pick things up from lower places for them.
1) Do not hold back any opinions positive or negative
2) So you know the box? Don't think outside the box, LIVE outside the box.
3) Include everyone
4) Be a team player, contribute with respect
5) Leave your problems at home
6) Be a good leader

Great ideas, Stephanie! Haahaa, I love them.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I got:

1. We could run expiraments with the people who wait outside grocery stores. see if they are more likely to talk to different kinds of people.
ReplyDelete2. Another thing we could do is apply for a job at random places. see who the people are more responsive too.
3. How about if different group members pretend to be homeless and who get more dirty looks or more money...
